Preview – Pool/Billiards – World Cup of Pool set for Manila

By admin | Sep 2, 2010

Efren “Bata” Reyes and Francisco “Django” Bustamante, Filipino pool legends and betting odds favorites, are renewing their celebrated partnership September 7-12 for the PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool. For the crown, this will be their third run. In midtown Manila, the tournament will take place at Robinson’s Place.

During the launch yesterday at the Solar Century Tower in Makati City, in Filipino, Reyes said, “We hope to win it again, but it’s going to be difficult because there are many good players out there”.

Solar Sport’s CEO, Wilson Cheng said, “We’re expecting another exciting tournament just like last year”.

Matchroom Sport, which owns the entire franchise, awarded a second slot to the Philippines. Philippines are helping pave the way for another explosive pair, Dennis Orcollo and Roberto Gomez, with the Philippines being the host country.

On Sept. 7th, the Reyes-Bustamante team will be opening its campaign by taking on Thailand’s Nitiway Kanjanasari and Surathep Poochalam at 6 p.m. Reyes-Bustamante topped the inaugural edition in Newport, Wales, as well as last year at the SM North Edsa, four years ago.

Considering they lost to the same team in the nine-ball doubles back in 2007 at the Thailand Southeast Asian Games, Reyes has said they are not going to underestimate the Thais. “We’re still embarrassed by that loss”, said Reyes.

Against Croatia’s Carlo Dalmatin and Philipp Stojanovic, Orcollo and Gomez, who replaced Ronnie Alcano, will debut on Sept. 8. At 6 p.m, this tournament will take place.

“The Iceman” Immonen & Markus Java, Germany’s Ralf Soquet & Oliver Ortmann, Chinese Taipei’s Pin Yi & Chang Jung Lin, and the United States’ Rodney Morris & Johnny Archer are the serious participants that are expected to win the title.

With the runner-ups claiming $30,000, the champions will take in an incredible $60,000. After the six-day event, the total cash prizes will be handed out.

Preview of Neil Robertson for 2010/11

By admin | Aug 19, 2010

Australia’s Neil Robertson became the 18th different winner of snooker’s biggest tournament of the modern era by winning the World Championship back in May. Where does he go from here is the question for 2010/11?

For the first time, the last man to lift the World Championship trophy was the man who Neil beat to win the 2010 crown, Graeme Dott. To lift the title beforehand, few expected the same from gritty Scotsman and perhaps therefore the levels of expectation upon him for 2006/7 were not overly great. Graeme produce some of the finest snooker of his career during that season, to his credit however, adding a second ranking event title to his CV at the China Open as well as reaching the semi-finals of the UK Championship only to lose out to countryman Stephen Hendry. As his world title defense ended on the opening day against Ian McCulloch, he was to suffer a disappointing end to the season. Before personal problems were to intervene, overall it was to be a good follow up campaign.

On the other hand, Ebdon’s 2002/3 season was not to be a strong one, a semi-final appearance at the UK Championship proving to be the highlight of his campaign. At the Crucible come May, Peter had put such a strong emphasis on defending his world crown and he had put such a strong emphasis on defending his world crown. Whether Neil falls into this trap, will be interesting to see.

By admin | May 5, 2010

Beloved Scotsman John Higgins is the number one snooker player in the world. He has won 3 world championships with the most recent being in 2009. He also has ranked in the top 16 snooker players in the world for 10 consecutive years. However, the alleged accusations that he accepted bribes for fixing snooker matches threaten to destroy his legacy forever.

News of the World, a British Tabloid journal first broke the story. The paper actually had its own undercover operation in which some of the reporters of the paper posed as businessmen who were interested in discussing future snooker events with Higgins. The meeting took place in a hotel room in Kiev, Ukraine. During this conversation, these businessmen allegedly offered money to the world champion to throw frames in upcoming matches. According the News of the World, Higgins, along with his manager Pat Mooney was filmed agreeing to throw four separate frames in four different upcoming matches for $398,000.

Higgins and Mooney have denied any and all claims of bribery. According to Higgins, bet online favorite star, he only continued with the conversation in fear of his physical safety. Higgins says he thought the men were Russian mafia and went along with the conversation in order to get out of the room without being harmed. He has vowed to clear his name.

On May 2, 2010 John Higgins was suspended from competing professionally in snooker by World Professional Billboards Association pending a full investigation.

The Billiards Table

By admin | Sep 22, 2009
Bars and recreation venues in rural or urban areas offer to their visitors the excitement and the sportsmanship of a famous table-played game, called pool or billiard. On the billiards table’s totally flat surface, pool game fans strike, with the use of a specially designed long wooden stick known as “cue stick,” colorful balls moving them around the table’s area. Pool games attract a variety of publics from around the world, who enjoy the exhilaration of calculating angles and estimating how many strikes it will take them to accomplish their winning goal.

Pool tables are mainly separated into two categories, called carom and pocket tables. In fact, the word “billiards” when standing alone refers to the carom games played on a table without pockets, as opposed to games played on pocket billiards which people recognize as “pools” or also known as “snooker” tables. In Britain and Ireland though, the word “billiards” denotes the “English billiard” exclusively, which is the version of the table with the ball pockets. The difference between the two types is that carom billiards tables do not have six openings four at each table corner and two at the middle of each of the table’s largest sides in which the pool player is called to direct the colorful balls on the surface of the table by striking each one of them, or more than one at a time, with a white ball. The white ball acts as the “mediator” between the cue stick’s point and the round surface of the colored ball the striker aims to hit. If the striker manages to hit the white ball with the right speed and from the right angle then it will in turn hit the colored one which will be directed to fall into one of the tables’ holes. Pool table fans generally refer to pocket billiard games, such as 8-ball, 9-ball, straight pool and one-pocket.

Found in many sizes and styles, billiards or pools are tables in a rectangular shape and are generally twice as long as they are wide. When someone refers to the number of a pool table’s foots this actually denotes its longer sides’ length. Mainly a function of space, the pool table’s length varies. English billiard tables, for example, are 12 feet long, while bars typically offer 7-foot tables. Pool halls tend to have 9-foot tables for more professional players, whereas the once commonly found 10-foot tables are now considered collectible items. Finally, the “felt” or “baize” is the cloth that covers the pool table’s exposed surface and he higher its quality the faster the balls run on its completely flat surface.

While the world “billiard” has presumably originated from the French word “billart,” which means “mace”-an implement that was the predecessor of the modern cue-the game did not remain constricted in Europe. Evolving from an outdoor to an indoor game, billiard became known as “pool,” which originates from “poolrooms” where people gambled off their money betting on horse races. Since billiard tables were commonly found in this type of venues, pools became a synonym of billiards and gained fanatic supporters in every continent.

Cheap Pool Tables – What Everyone Ought To Know

By admin | Sep 17, 2009

Most people would love to buy a pool table however; they often get deterred due to the fairly steep prices of pool tables. But you don’t have to always shell out a mountain for your pool table. There are many places where you could buy a cheap pool table at competitive and affordable rates. But just because the prices are low doesn’t mean that the quality is low too. So for those of you who thought that getting a pool table simply wouldn’t fit into your budget, think again and read on.

The things that you need to keep in mind before you buy a pool table are the features that you are looking for. Usually when you walk into a sports good store with the intention of buying a pool table, the friendly salesman will be more than happy to help you make your choice. But remember: a sports goods salesman is rarely any different from a car sales man and they will both try to sell you things, which you don’t really need. So before you pay a few hundred dollars more for hand carved legs, try to analyze if this feature is really important to you. If you are going to use the table at home then looks should come second to the durability and usability.

Needless to say, the sales person will be more concerned about his commission and the profit that the store will make from the sale of a pool table. So instead of going to the retail store, try to see if you can directly talk to the dealer. This should bring the price down substantially and you just might find a cheap pool table right there. You can either check the local yellow pages for a dealer in your city or shop online. But if you are shopping online, never forget to inquire about the shipping costs, return policies and warranty. This is very important for if something had to go wrong with your pool table in the future. Also keep in mind that the weight of the pool table can also influence the price a lot when it comes to the shipping.

If you intend to use the pool table at home, you don’t have to go for the larger versions. A mid sized version starting at 7 ft and going up to 9 ft will be equally good and more cost effective. The smaller size makes them perfect for people who don’t have a lot of space in their house to accommodate the table but just because they are small doesn’t mean that you will have less fun using it. You don’t always have to pick the first pool table that you like; try to check out the other models in different shops before you single one out.

If buying a brand new table simply isn’t something that you can afford fret not! You can always go for a used pool table, which will usually be at a fraction of the cost of a new table. Sellers may be disposing off their pool tables for various reasons. Maybe they need the money or maybe they just want to create some more space in their house. Either way, this should give you a bargaining advantage. You can look for pool tables online through one of the auction sites or check out the newspaper for individuals or businesses that want to sell their pool tables. If you find an establishment, which is going out of business and wants to sell its assets including pool tables.

Cheap pool tables are not that hard to find. The whole idea of getting your hands on one is just to follow the right procedures and shop around. Soon you will be the owner of a pool table that you got for a bargain price.
